Drillworks – Light Art.

The illumination of the piece is the final stage of completion and obviously very important in how the work will come across.

In most cases the piece will be edge-lit from behind, either all the way around or sometimes top and bottom. Edge lighting allows the light to cast across the back of the work, gradually fading towards the centre, a sort of reverse sunburst effect. I also use LED light sheet which gives a strong even lighting directly behind the whole drilled area.

In the age of modern low energy LED lighting systems and the huge variety available there is a lighting configuration to suit every taste, but my preference is usually as natural as possible, a warm golden glow.

Where the work will eventually be displayed is also an important consideration and just like any other light source, the work comes into it’s element as daylight fades.
